Tatami

Tatami mats for martial arts and combat sports

At RoninWear we carry a wide selection of tatami mats for gyms, clubs, academies, and home use.

We mainly work with tatami mats for BJJ, Judo, and MMA.

Types of tatami

Puzzle tatami (interlocking, EVA)

The most popular option for home use and smaller gyms.

These are EVA foam tiles that lock together like a puzzle.

Easy to assemble, store, and transport. Available in different thicknesses (20 mm, 25 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm) depending on the level of impact absorption you need.

The most common finishes are tatami-texture (Japanese tatami effect), smooth, and non-slip.

We don't usually keep this product in stock since it's not the best fit for BJJ or MMA, but if you need it, get in touch with us.

Roll-out tatami

A professional solution for medium and large gyms, and also great for home use since it can be set up, taken down, and stored easily.

This type of tatami โ€” like Dollamur, Zebra Mats, or Fuji Mats โ€” comes in cylindrical rolls that you unroll to use and roll back up for storage.

To connect them and keep them from shifting during use, a strip of hook-and-loop tape does the job.

Competition Judo / BJJ tatami

Approved competition tatami mats typically have 40 mm thickness and high density (250 kg/m3 or more), with a non-slip base and the ability to absorb the falls, takedowns, and throws of Judo (ippon), MMA, or BJJ.

These are the mats you'll see at IBJJF tournaments, national Judo federations, and most BJJ, MMA, or Judo academies.

The most common thicknesses in combat sports:

  • 25 mm: commonly used for general striking training: Muay Thai, Kickboxing, Boxing, or for limited BJJ or MMA use when there are no heavy takedowns.
  • 40 mm: Judo, BJJ, MMA, official competition, hard falls. High density, maximum absorption.

Density and firmness

Beyond thickness, the foam density determines how much the mat compresses on impact.

Foam that's too soft compresses too much and loses stability; foam that's too hard doesn't absorb impact well and punishes your body on falls.

As a rule: the heavier the practitioners and the more takedowns involved, the higher the density you need โ€” for BJJ and MMA, 250 kg/m3 is standard, and higher-density options are also available.

Colors

There's a wide variety of colors available, though the easiest and fastest to get are the standard ones: blue, gray, red, yellow, black, and green.
